Freedom to Read Week

proclamation heading

Freedom to Read Week

 February 26 – March 4, 2017

WHEREAS the freedom to read is the essence of free inquiry and essential to democratic decision making. Reading inspires the spirit of exploration and the pursuit of knowledge for all.

Freedom of expression is guaranteed to everyone by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and it is our responsibility as individuals and organizations to ensure that this freedom is preserved and maintained. To that end, the Book & Periodical Council organizes Freedom to Read Week across the country every February.

To celebrate “Freedom to Read Week,” the Toronto Public Library is planning events, which will promote the public's awareness of the right to intellectual freedom as well as the city’s diverse literary culture.

The Toronto Public Library endeavours to build collections that reflect the diversity of interests, cultures and languages in our city and is committed to offering a full range of fiction and non-fiction materials in a variety of formats.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 26 – March 4, 2017 as "Freedom to Read Week" in the City of Toronto.
