Application Requirements for Business, Trades and Professions

What partnerships and corporations need to apply for a business licence or permit

In the City of Toronto, many businesses, trades and professions are required to be licensed as per Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 545.

Who can apply - individuals, partnerships and corporations

Any person can apply for any licences and permits listed on the Business, Trades & Professions Licences & Permits Application page; however, corporations and partnerships can only apply for some of these licences and permits, as listed below.

What partnerships and corporations can apply for

All licences and permits can only be applied for by individuals, however only the following can be applied for by corporations and partnerships:

Definitions of identification and business documents

In the sections below, the follow terms are defined as:

Two pieces of identification

Two pieces of government-issued identification must include:

  1. proof of work status, such as a Passport or Citizenship Card, Permanent Resident Card, Work Permit, Canadian Birth Certificate; and
  2. a valid photo ID such as a Driver's Licence, Photo Identification Card, Canadian Passport.

 

Note that Health Cards are not accepted.

What individuals need to apply

Individuals need to provide the two pieces of identification as described above, as well as the specific application requirements listed on each of the specific licence pages in the Business, Trades & Professions Licences & Permits Application section. 

What partnerships need to apply

In addition to the specific application requirements listed on each of the specific licence pages in the Business, Trades & Professions Licences & Permits Application section, partnerships must provide:

  • a business location/address;
  • a copy of provincial business name registration or signed franchise agreement; and
  • a partnership agreement.

What will be provided to applicants at the time of application

If shares in the partnership are 50/50, a Controlling Interest Form will be provided at the time of application.  The form must be completed and notarized; notarization can be done at the Licence & Permit Issuing Office where the application is submitted.

What corporations need to apply 

In addition to the specific application requirements listed on each of the specific licence pages in the Business, Trades & Professions Licences & Permits Application section, corporations must provide:

  • a business location/address;
  • a copy of Articles of Incorporation;
  • a copy of the provincial business name registration or signed franchise agreement; and
  • if there has been a change to the list of officers and directors, please also provide a current Corporate Profile Report.

If the president, director or officer of the corporation are unable to apply in person at the Licence & Permit Issuing Office, a designate may apply on their behalf. The designate must:

  • have an original letter advising of their signing authority on the corporation letterhead;
  • provide two pieces of identification for themselves; and
  • provide two pieces of identification for each officer and director of the corporation, or, if original identification is not available, notarized photocopies of the identification.

What will be provided to applicants at the time of application

A Controlling Interest Form (If shares in the company are 50/50) and Notarized Annual Liability form will be provided at the time of application.   They must be completed and notarized; notarization can be done at the Licence & Permit Issuing Office where the application is submitted.
