Interfaith Harmony Week

proclamation heading

Interfaith Harmony Week

February 1 - 7, 2017

WHEREAS the United Nations has designated the first week in February as World Interfaith Harmony Week in an effort to encourage a mutual understanding among all cultures and to eliminate every form of discrimination, intolerance and hate based on religion or beliefs.

His Majesty King Abdulla ll of Jordan first proposed a call to promote a message of faith and tolerance among the world's religions in order for the citizens of the world to demonstrate their common values and good will towards each other.

According to the Canadian Bill of Rights, it is everyone's fundamental right to observe and practice their religion, conviction, faith or beliefs in freedom and free from persecution.

As a city that prides itself on being one of the most multicultural cities in the world, Toronto respects and accepts all religions, faiths and beliefs that make up our diverse communities.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 1 - 7, 2017 as "Interfaith Harmony Week" in the City of Toronto.
