3Rs Ambassador Program

Overview

An education and outreach program, using resident volunteers, to help people living in apartments and condos to reduce, reuse and recycle more.

Objective:

The long-term goal is to have one or a few 3Rs Ambassadors in all apartment and condo buildings. The 3Rs Ambassador Volunteer will do education and fun outreach campaigns aimed at reducing the garbage created at the building.

  • This program is aimed at Residents and Property Managers of buildings that receive waste collection services from the City of Toronto
  • Ambassadors do education and outreach campaigns to help tenants reduce garbage
  • Campaigns can be designed to accommodate specific needs of the building and residents
  • Simple as putting up information posters in common areas, or bigger campaigns like clothing drives or waste free events
  • Get free resources and support from City staff
  • Help the environment
  • Reduce your building's garbage costs
  • Get to know your neighbours
  • Help the City reach the waste diversion target of 70%
  • Meet people who are passionate about waste management
  • Earn volunteer hours (10 hours/month is recommended but not required)
  • Fill out the application form below
  • Complete a ten (10) minute phone interview
  • Attend a three (3) hour training session

     

Eligibility

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Live in an apartment or condo in Toronto (Property Managers and Superintendent can also sign up to become a 3Rs Ambassador)
  • Your building receives waste collection service from the City of Toronto
  • Your building manager should be made aware of and agree with the program as they may need to assist in delivering the education/outreach program

  • Provides information and updates on the 3Rs
  • Creates opportunities to meet other 3Rs Ambassadors and share knowledge
  • Provides free literature, posters, stickers and promotional items
  • Available for assistance with campaign planning, questions or concerns
  • Put up posters
  • Create a lobby display
  • Organize waste-free potluck meal
  • Hold waste diversion activities and games night
  • Organize a "reuse-it" craft night
  • Book exchange
  • Door-to-door outreach campaign

The primary goal of this program is to promote the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and to help keep waste from going to landfill.  Ambassador training, material and support is free. By diverting more materials from garbage, you can help lower your building’s solid waste costs.

By having a 3Rs Ambassador in your building you can expect to see many positive outcomes:

  • Tailored education campaign to suit your building and its residents
  • Volunteer(s) work in consultation with you (ie. put up posters, clothing drives, etc.)
  • Strong communities and sense of ownership
  • Lower your garbage collection costs
