World Interfaith Harmony Week
February 1 – 7, 2014
WHEREAS the first week in February has been designated as World Interfaith Harmony Week. It was first proposed by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan who sought to promote a message of faith and tolerance among all of the world's religions and to demonstrate their common values and good will towards each other.
The freedom to observe and practice one's religion, individual conviction, faith or beliefs without fear is a fundamental right, recognized under the Canadian Bill of Rights. In 2010, the United Nations passed a resolution to recognize World Interfaith Harmony Week to enhance a mutual understanding among all cultures and to eliminate every form of discrimination, intolerance and hate based on religion, faith or beliefs.
As a city that prides itself on being one of the most multicultural cities in the world, Toronto respects and accepts all religions, faiths and beliefs that make up our diverse communities.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rob Ford, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 1 – 7, 2014 as “World Interfaith Harmony Week” in the City of Toronto.
