The City of Toronto has developed a pilot project to show real-time travel information on its variable message signs in an effort to provide motorists with better information to assist them as they travel around the city.
The signs, which are located on the Gardiner Expressway, Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard, will display the travel time to various points along these key roadways. On some signs, travel times for both the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard will be posted, providing motorists with information to make choices about which roads to travel to get to their destination.
A total of 11 signs are currently in place to provide this information while an additional seven signs will be installed later this year.
In addition to providing travel times, the signs will continue to provide information about incidents and other messages that will be beneficial to travellers.
This initiative is part of the city's Congestion Management Plan that was approved by Toronto City Council in December, 2013. The program will see the implementation of numerous initiatives over the next five years aimed at improving traffic movement on Toronto streets.
