December 5, 2010
WHEREAS the Christmas Season kindles the spirit of giving, sharing and caring like no other time of the year.
Started by the late “Honest” Ed Mirvish 23 years ago, Turkey Day has become a much anticipated event in Toronto. In keeping with the holiday spirit, son, David and the Mirvish family have kept the tradition of giving free turkey and Christmas fruit cake to many less fortunate families and individuals who would otherwise not be able to enjoy the traditional Christmas turkey meal at this special time of year.
Ed Mirvish will be remembered for his selfless commitment and tremendous kindness that earned him the admiration of so many who have been touched by his generosity. Ed contributed significantly to those less fortunate, to the arts and to the young people of Toronto and we deeply appreciate the tremendous impact he had on our city.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rob Ford, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim December 5, 2010 as “Turkey Day” and extend sincere appreciation to David and the Mirvish family for this significant gesture and for their ongoing generosity.
