Ward 31 Beaches-East York
Councillor Michael Tziretas was elected to Toronto City Council in a by-election held in Ward 31, Beaches-East York on December 3, 2001 and served until November 30, 2003.
Michael attended local public schools and graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics, and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
He was first elected to the Borough of East York Council, and represented the people of Ward 1 from 1994 to 1997. Throughout his term on council, Michael was a member of the East York Budget Committee. He helped achieve a zero tax increase for three consecutive years and was instrumental in helping reduce the East York debt. Michael also had a proven track of responding to the needs of his constituents.
From 1997 to 2001, Michael served as a tax auditor with the Ontario government. Michael is married to Vangie and has one son, James and one daughter, Victoria.
During his tenure as Councillor, Michael served on a wide range of city committees. These included: Toronto-East York Community Council, Community Services Committee, Budget Advisory Committee, Tenant Defence Sub-Committee, Toronto Zoo Board of Management, City of Toronto Five-Year Fiscal Plan Committee, and, Crescent Town Club Board of Management.
He also worked hard to protect services important to his local constituency. He successfully protected taxpayer service counters in the East York Civic Centre, improved area parks and recreation staffing levels, and actively supported various citywide initiatives such as the City of Toronto new Official Plan.
