Overview
The Equity, Diversity and Human Rights division ensures that the City's services, programs and policies are responsive to the needs of Toronto's diverse communities by:
- providing expert advice to the City Manager Council, divisions and employees; aligning corporate programs (in line) with legislative requirements, policy commitments and strategic priorities to foster equity, diversity and inclusion in all City practices;
- aligning and implementing key corporate and community initiatives to achieve service excellence;
- administering human rights and service delivery complaints processes.
News
"Building an Equitable City Together"
The City of Toronto's Working Group on City Funding Support for Toronto's Community-Based Anti-Discrimination Infrastructure (the Working Group) was established in the late fall of 2012 on the direction of Toronto City Council. The Working Group's role is to provide advice on ways in which the City's support for Toronto's community-based anti-discrimination infrastructure could be strengthened.
Amended Human Rights Code
On June 19, 2012, the Ontario Human Rights Code was amended to add the grounds of "gender Identity" and "gender expression". Previously complaints brought on the two new grounds were accepted under the ground of "sex". The explicit recognition of the Trans community received support from all parties in the provincial legislature. The City of Toronto is in the process of amending its Human Rights and Anti-Harassment policy to reflect the change. Read the revised Ontario Human Rights Code.
Mentoring opportunities for skilled immigrants
The Profession to Profession Mentoring Immigrants Program is a program that matches members of the Toronto Public Service with skilled immigrants looking for employment in their field/occupation in Toronto. If you're a newcomer to Canada and an internationally trained professional, this program may be helpful to you.

Regional Champions Campaign
On April 10, the 15 women councillors launched the 2012 Toronto Regional Champion Campaign in efforts to increase women's participation in municipal government. To address the lack of women in politics, the female members of Toronto City Council will coach 30 young women from diverse communities about the job of a municipal councillor.
Aboriginal Affairs
The City of Toronto recognizes and respects the unique status and cultural diversity among the Aboriginal communities of Toronto. In collaboration with Aboriginal communities, the City hosts events and engages in intergovernmental dialogue on an Urban Aboriginal strategy under the leadership of an Aboriginal Affairs Committee.
