Volunteer Opportunities

A wide range of adult and youth volunteer opportunities are available at many participating buildings. Volunteers are ambassadors for Doors Open Toronto (DOT) and for the City of Toronto.

General criteria

General criteria to participate as a Doors Open Toronto volunteer include:

  • Familiarity with the program
  • Enjoy dealing with the public
  • Excellent communication skills, fluency in English
  • Appreciation of the architecture and history of Toronto
  • Mandatory attendance at an information and interview session for prospective volunteers

Information Ambassadors

Many positions available

  • 16 years or older
  • Commit to a four or eight-hour shift
  • Commit to additional training by your designated building if required
  • Greet visitors and orient them to the venue
  • Provide information such as location of washrooms, tour schedules, etc.
  • Crowd control at high traffic buildings

City Hall Info Desk Ambassadors

3 positions available for both Saturday and Sunday

  • 18 years or older
  • Commit to an eight-hour shift
  • Provide information such as building locations, program guides, directions, etc.
  • Answer the phone and source information on the website
  • Must be familiar with program venues
  • Fluency in a second language (French, Mandarin, etc.)

Tour Guide Ambassadors

Several positions available - subject to venue requests

  • 18 years or older
  • Commit to a four-hour or eight-hour shift
  • Commit to additional training by your designated building if required
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Liaise with the Building Volunteer Coordinator to learn scripted information for guided tours
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of large crowds
  • Have strong presentation skills

Floater – Downtown Core Only

15 positions available for both Saturday and Sunday

  • 18 years or older
  • Commit to a four-hour shift
  • Must be ready to be dispatched, (from City Hall Headquarters), as required to high-traffic sites that need extra help

Mobile Information Ambassadors

16 positions available for both Saturday and Sunday

  • 16 years or older
  • Commit to a four-hour or eight-hour shift
  • Greet passersby and encourage them to participate
  • Provide information, such as location of washrooms, tour schedules, etc. 

Volunteer Captains – Various Areas

18 positions available. Note: Doors Open Volunteer Captains must be volunteers with the City of Toronto's Cultural Events already. They are expected to report both event days.

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Proven team leaders, organized and exceptionally reliable
  • Commit to approximately 32 hours, including: two nine-hour shifts on the DOT weekend, three training sessions (one Volunteer Captain training and two DOT volunteer orientations)
  • Provide approximately six hours of administrative help, which includes corresponding with their volunteer teams and Building Volunteer Coordinators, and providing attendance documentation and feedback to the DOT team
