Canadian Magazine Week

proclamation headingCanadian Magazine Week

June 5 - 11, 2016

WHEREAS Canada has a robust print and digital magazine media industry that is an essential part of life for many Torontonians and Canadians with 92 per cent of them reading a magazine at least once a week.

Magazines cover every interest and passion. Roughly 88 per cent of readers believe that a magazine should have Canadian-focused content.

There are more than 2,000 Canadian magazine media brands, employing 15,000 Canadians in high-value jobs. The majority of the Canadian magazine media industry is based in Ontario, with 78 per cent of the industry in Toronto, making our city the overwhelming centre of magazine media in Canada.

During Canadian Magazine Week, Toronto will host MagNet, the largest gathering of magazine media in North America. It is a collaborative effort from three national associations: the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors, the Circulation Management Association of Canada, and Magazines Canada. MagNet brings together the diverse creators and business people behind Canada’s magazine industry, welcoming over 1,200 magazine professionals from across the country and around the world to Toronto.

Canadian Magazine Week shines a spotlight on Canada’s magazine media industry and encourages Torontonians to embrace the homegrown $1.7 billion industry that is made up of Canadian-content magazines.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim June 5 – 11, 2016 as "Canadian Magazine Week" in the City of Toronto.
