Drop-off Depots

On entering the Drop-off Depot, your vehicle will be weighed and you will be asked for a deposit. The deposit amount requested depends on the type of waste you declare and weight of your vehicle at the time of entry. A minimum $20 deposit is required which includes a flat fee charge of $10.

After dropping off your items in the designated areas, you will drive over the exit weigh scales and the cost of disposal (fee) will be calculated. You will either receive a refund for the difference or extra charges will be collected for the outstanding balance of the fee.

Cash/charge/debit accepted.

Note: During peak periods, priority may be given to vehicles operating on behalf of the City of Toronto.

 

Please note: Drop-off hours for electronic waste and household hazardous waste are different from the general operating hours.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Corrosive (car battery acid and drain cleaners), Flammable (lighter fluid, turpentine and gasoline), Explosive (aerosol containers), Poisonous (cleaning fluids, pesticides and expired medications), cooking oil, Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), Helium and propane tanks/cylinders, Syringes and needles.   • Helium and propane tanks/cylinders disposal
    Even when empty are a dangerous hazardous waste, regardless of supplier claims. These must never be put in either your Blue Bin or Garbage Bin and must be taken to a Drop-off Depot or Community Environment Days for proper disposal.
  • Reuse Centres at Drop-off Depots
    There are also Reuse Centres at your local HHW Depots where residents can donate useable but unwanted HHW materials, including oil and latex paint. These items are sorted and set aside for others to pick up, for free.

Alternative disposal option

Residents can check the Orange Drop Program to find the nearest collection site to drop off household hazardous or special waste that includes antifreeze, batteries, paints, pesticides, pressurized containers, solvents, etc.

Electronic Waste

Cell phones and home phones, Computer cables and accessories, Laptop computers, Keyboards, VCR/DVD players, Hand-held computers, Pagers, Radios, Cameras and video recorders, TVs, Desktop computers and monitors, Printers and scanners, Copiers, Typewriters, Fax machines, and Stereos, tuners and turntables, Receivers and speakers.

  • If you have curbside collection, you can set out electronic equipment for collection.
  • Or you can take computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, televisions, cameras, video players, stereos, cell phones to a Drop-off Depot or Community Environment Days. Limit is 10 combined units of monitors, televisions and desktop computers per day. No limit on small items such as keyboards and peripherals.

VHS tapes, CDs and DVDs do not go in your Blue Bin. Please pass them on for reuse or put them in your Garbage Bin. Some electronics stores accept CDs and DVDs for recycling. Check recycleyourelectronics.ca.

Renovation Waste

Renovation waste (including construction and demolition waste) is not collected at curbside. This includes drywall, doors, lumber, counters, cabinets, roof shingles, etc. These items can be taken to a Drop-off Depot. Fees will apply.

Bricks, concrete, cinder blocks, paving stones, asphalt, soil, dirt, stones, etc. are not collected curbside or through other City of Toronto programs. Please make arrangements with a company in the private sector specializing in reusing or disposing of this type of material.

Drywall

Accepted at Bermondsey, Commissioners and Ingram only.

  • Clean construction drywall, including painted, papered or vinyl covered or demolition drywall. Please remove nails, screws and metal corner beads.
  • Restricted to one tonne and manual unloading.

Leaf & Yard Waste

  • Leaves, branches (less than 7.5cm/3" diameter and 120 cm/48" in length), hedge and plant trimmings, and twigs - (NO GRASS).
  • Tree limbs, trunks and stumps are not collected or accepted at City's Drop-off Depots if the diameter of the wood exceeds 7.5 cm (3 inches).

 If items exceed this size, please make arrangements with a private company specializing in handling this type of waste.

Tires

Rubber tires, excluding heavy truck, forklift and large off-road tires. Remove rims. Large quantities of tires accepted at the Dufferin location only. Bermondsey, Commissioners and Ingram accept 5 tires per load. Do not put tires out for curbside collection.

Scrap Metal

Auto parts, tools, pipes, cable, lawnmowers, bicycle frames, large and small appliances.

Propane tanks and gas cylinders are not to be disposed of in the scrap metal bin. (Must be dropped off at HHW Depot.)

Blue Bin Items

Blue Bin items are accepted at Drop-off Depots. Check specific depot details to make sure item is accepted.

All Blue Bin items are restricted to one tonne and manual unloading.

Containers

  • Plastic bottles and jugs (lids on), Milk/juice cartons and boxes (put plastic tops and straws in garbage), Glass bottles and jars (put lids in garbage), Aluminum cans, Plastic food jars, tubs and lids (e.g. margarine, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream containers) Metal cans (place lid inside can and pinch closed), Cardboard cans (e.g. frozen juice, refrigerated dough, chips, nuts, powdered drink mix – put plastic pull-off strips in garbage; place metal ends inside cardboard can and pinch closed), Aluminum trays, pie plates and roasting pans, Plastic bottles (lids and sprayers screwed on tight), Plastic kitty litter tubs with plastic handles, Plastic laundry detergent tubs and lids, Aerosol cans (empty; put caps in garbage), Metal paint cans & lids (empty, separate lids from cans). No propane tanks or gas cylinders (these items should be dropped off at the HHW Depot).

Foam polystyrene and plastic retail shopping bags

  • Foam food and protective packaging (e.g. drinking cups, egg cartons, meat trays, takeout food containers, electronics packaging), and Plastic retail shopping bags without drawstrings, metal detailing or hard plastic handles (remove receipts: place all plastic bags in one retail or grocery plastic bag and and tie handles together)

Paper

  • Bags, rolls, junk mail, writing/computer paper, envelopes, window envelopes, Shredded paper (put in clear plastic bag and tie closed), Gift wrap, cards (no ribbons, bows, foil wrap), and Newspapers, flyers, telephone directories, magazines, catalogues, soft/ hardcover books (remove plastic covers, liners, over-wrap and put in garbage.
  • Boxboard boxes (e.g. cereal, tissue, detergent, egg cartons – flatten; remove liners, plastic windows and put in garbage), and Corrugated cardboard (clean, unwaxed, flattened; pizza boxes must be empty; remove plastic over-wrap from pop/water cases and put in garbage).

Garbage

Garbage can be dropped off at the depot with charges. Mixed loads of garbage and recycling will be denied entry.

Please note: For the safety reasons, all garbage, recycling and household hazardous materials delivered to Drop-off Depots must be delivered by motorized vehicles.

Standard Rates

Garbage

$103.00 per metric tonne

  • Up to 97.1 kilograms - $10.00 flat fee
  • 97.2 kilograms and over - $1.00 per 9.71 kilograms or a fraction thereof (e.g. 125 kilograms of garbage will cost $13.00)

Blue Bin items, scrap metal, yard waste, etc.

$77.25 per metric tonne

  • Up to 20 kilograms - Free
  • Over 20 kilograms* - will be charged at $77.25 per 1000 kgs or a fraction thereof rounded to the nearest dollar (i.e., 250 kgs = $19.25 billed at $19.00 or 750 kgs = $57.75 billed at $58.00)

        * Payment is based on entire load, not on the amount over 20 kilograms.

Household hazardous waste and electronics

Free drop-off. Since there is no charge, your vehicle does not need to be weighed.

Deposit

  • In the event that a weighscale is not in service, the charge shall be based on the vehicle axle.
  • Drivers will be informed at the time of arrival to the weighscales and will be given the option to dispose and pay or leave without disposal. Alternate site locations will be provided to the driver if they wish to dump at another City location where normal vehicle weighing is available.

Axle rates for materials not listed will be based on the vehicle estimated weight multiplied by the rate standard factor.

Solid Waste Management Site Regulations

  1. Loads must arrive fully covered by tarpaulins or acceptable alternatives.
  2. Vehicle must come to a complete stop before being driven onto weighscales.
  3. Directions of City of Toronto personnel on duty must be obeyed.
  4. Only designated entrance and exit routes may be used.
  5. All speed limits and signs posted on site must be obeyed.
  6. Safety helmets and safety boots/shoes must be worn in designated areas.
  7. Unloading is permitted only in authorized designated areas.
  8. Only the driver shall leave the vehicle while in the unloading area.
  9. Tarpaulins and turnbuckles may be removed / released only in unloading area.
  10. All unloading doors are to be secured with chains or acceptable alternatives.
  11. Scavenging is prohibited.
  12. Smoking in the unloading area is prohibited.
  13. Loose material must be removed from truck boxes before the vehicle leaves the unloading area.
  14. All doors must be closed and secured before leaving the unloading area.
  15. Unsafe vehicles are not allowed on site.
  16. Generators of loads containing recyclable material must be identified.
  17. Mixed loads of waste, recyclable material and/or prohibited materials are not accepted.
  18. Waste material type and source must be identified. 
  19. Materials listed as Prohibited Waste shall not be delivered to the Transfer Stations for disposal purposes.
  20. Disco Road Location: Due to the Asian Long Horned Beetle (ALHB) quarantine, all loads containing yard waste material originating outside of the quarantined area must be redirected to the Ingram or Dufferin transfer stations. ONLY loads originating inside the quarantine area bordered by Finch on the North, Martin Grove on the East and Hwy 401 on the South will be accepted at the Disco Transfer Station.

These Regulations will be enforced under the Transfer Station Bylaw that was enacted as Municipal Code Chapter 846 through Bylaw 746-2004 and contraventions of the Bylaw may result in access restrictions and/or fines.

Prohibited Waste

The following materials shall not be delivered to the Transfer Stations for disposal purposes.

Note: Drop-off Depots are made up of many facilities, one which is the Transfer Station and another is the HHW Facility. Materials stated in this prohibited list, are not necessarily rejected at HHW Facilities.

  1. Acute hazardous waste chemical as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  2. Biomedical waste, and pathological waste, whether solid or liquid, including but not limited to any animal or human organ or part thereof; bone, muscle or other animal or human tissue or part thereof; used bandages, poultices, dressings, medicines, vitamins, drugs, vaccines, needles, syringes, vials or any other similar material or substance which contains or may contain pathogenic micro-organisms or which may be hazardous or dangerous and anything designated as pathological waste by Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  3. Hazardous waste chemical as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  4. Corrosive waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  5. Hazardous industrial waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  6. Ignitable waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  7. PCB waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 362;
  8. PCB waste as defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2003 40 CFR 761, in force on October 1, 2004;
  9. Radioactive waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation347;
  10. Reactive waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  11. Severely toxic waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  12. Leachate toxic waste as defined in Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990, Regulation 347;
  13. Pharmaceutical waste;
  14. Any household product, material or item labelled as “corrosive,” “toxic,” “reactive,” “explosive,” “oxidizing,” “poisonous,” “infectious” or “flammable,” including but not limited to the following:
    1. Pool or photographic chemicals;
    2. Laundry bleach:
    3. Drain, oven, toilet and carpet cleaning solutions;
    4. Paint thinner and paint remover;
    5. Rat and mouse poison;
    6. Flea collars and powders;
    7. Insect killers;
    8. Moth balls;
    9. Weed killers;
    10. Fungicides;
    11. Wood preservatives;
    12. Oil-based and latex paints;
    13. Engine oil;
    14. Brake and transmission fluid;
    15. Antifreeze;
    16. Automotive batteries (including lead acid batteries);
    17. Ni-cad rechargeable batteries (including lead acid batteries);
    18. Propane tanks;
    19. Other gas tanks, including lighters;
    20. Aerosol containers; and
    21. Fire extinguishers.
  15. Waste generated as a result of construction, demolition or renovation, including but not limited to soil, drywall, bricks, concrete, concrete or cinder blocks, paving stones, asphalt, wood greater than 1.2 metres (four feet) in length, scrap metal, and asbestos;
  16. Hay, straw, manure or animal excrement;
  17. Any waste in liquid form including but not limited to swill or other organic matter not properly drained and securely wrapped;
  18. Sod, grass, grass clippings;
  19. Mixed loads of waste and recyclable material or recyclable (Blue Bin) materials that have been mixed with garbage;
  20. Beverage containers, including aluminum food or beverage cans (including cans made primarily of aluminum), glass bottles and jars for food or beverages, steel food or beverage cans (including cans made primarily of steel), polyethylene terephthalate bottles for food or beverages (including bottles made primarily of polyethylene terephthalate), from all generators of industrial, commercial and institutional waste;
  21. Municipal wastewater sewage sludge or any other type of industrial sludge;
  22. Catch basin and screening waste;
  23. Incinerator ash, red ash and any other type of ash;
  24. Dusty materials;
  25. Contaminated soil;
  26. Tires, shredded rubber, and any tire residue;
  27. Drums (plastic or metal drums/uncrushed drums);
  28. Waste logs and trees;
  29. Leaf and yard waste as defined in Ontario Regulation 101/94; Disco Transfer Station -Due to the Asian Long Horned Beetle (ALHB) quarantine, all loads containing yard waste material originating outside of the quarantine area must be redirected to the Ingram or Dufferin transfer stations. ONLY loads originating inside the quarantine area bordered by Finch on the North, Martin Grove on the East and Hwy 401 on the South will be accepted at the Disco Transfer Station.
  30. Railway ties, telephone poles and any wood waste greater than 1.2 metres (four feet) in length;
  31. Clean fill, soil, sand, and aggregates;
  32. Animal carcasses, animal by-products, slaughterhouse remains;
  33. Alternate daily cover inclusive of de-watered paper fibre, wood chips, road base;
  34. Discarded commercial chemical products, off-specification species, container residues, and spill residues thereof identified and listed as toxic hazardous wastes under Rule 226 and enumerated in the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Waste Management Division’s Hazardous Waste Management Program Administrative Rules promulgated pursuant to Part 111 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended, Rule 299.9226 Table 205c, in force on October 1, 2004; and
  35. Designated materials and other items which have been banned from landfill or for which reasonable alternative disposal methods are available, as determined by the Commissioner.
