Overdose Awareness Day
August 31, 2015
WHEREAS every year on August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized in communities around the world to remember those whose lives have been lost and to raise awareness about the risks of overdose.
Overdose is the third leading cause of accidental death among people in Ontario with many of these deaths occurring in Toronto. Overdose deaths shatter families, friends and communities. Accidental overdose is largely preventable.
This day recognizes the devastating impact of drug overdose in Toronto and also provides an opportunity to remember individuals who have died while making a commitment to preventing future deaths.
The City of Toronto is committed to improving the health and well-being of all community members.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim August 31, 2015 as "Overdose Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto.
