Community Data Program - Toronto Consortium

The Community Data Program is an initiative that provides a rich source of data about communities across Canada.


What is the Community Data Program?

The Community Data Program (CDP) is a gateway for municipalities and community sector agencies to access customized data from Statistics Canada and other providers at reduced costs, to monitor and report on social and economic trends within their communities. The CDP is made up of a national network of more than 20 community data consortia. There is a community data consortium in most big Canadian cities. Members include more than 50 municipalities and 1000+ users, including local police, social planning councils, health and family service agencies, school boards United Ways and other organizations working on the ground for social development.

The three goals of the Community Data Program are:

  1. to purchase and facilitate access to social data at the smallest geographies possible
  2. to train organizations to access community data and use it for better decision making
  3. to network, communicate, and disseminate the results as widely as possible

 

Who administers the program?

The Community Data Program is led by the Canadian Council on Social Development (CCSD). CCSD is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization. The CDP has enabled the CCSD to negotiate with Statistics Canada and other data providers for the preparation and lower-cost purchase of a wide variety of data that is geographically specific for planning local programs and services. Each consortium will administer its own program locally - in this case, the City of Toronto's Social Development Finance & Administration Division is the local contact, for the Toronto Consortium. 

Who may join?

All government and non-government agencies may join the CDP. There are some restrictions in joining: you must be either a local government agency, or a non-government not-for-profit organization. Also those organizations with a National or Provincial mandate would not be eligible to join. If you are an agency outside of Toronto, please refer to the list of Consortia that may be in your local community.

How do I join and access the data?

All data are available on the national CDP website where users will be provided with logon access.  These are the steps to join:


1. Designate a Contact Person for your organization. This contact will authorize who may access the data from your organization, and authorize payments. Please send the Contact's full name, name of organization, and e-mail to us. 


2. Register on communitydata.ca if you haven't done so already. This is in order to facilitate contact with you as the program unfolds. 

Anyone in your organization is free to create an account with the Community Data Program. Registration as a user is free and there are no limits to the number of people within your organization who can register, or the number of tables each user can download. But only members may download data. 

Note that it takes one to two business day for us to activate your user account, after you have registered. If anyone wishes to register with an email address that doesn't correspond to your organization (e.g. @hotmail.com), we will have to verify their identity with you.

Keep track of the users within your organization. Send updates to your local Lead agency when new users register, or existing users leave.

3. E-mail us the length of time you wish your organization to be a member and we will send you an invoice. Minimum term is one year. There are two separate membership costs. First is the local fee that we charge and will invoice you accordingly. Cost to join is $242 per year (or $968 for four years). Costs for government members will differ (please contact us for the current rates).

Member organizations are also responsible for paying a yearly $125 annual fee for membership to the national CDP separately, which includes membership in the Canadian Council on Social Development, who administer the program centrally in Ottawa. (Note: Organizations that are already paying members of the Canadian Council on Social Development do not have to pay the $125 fee). If this is the case, please notify us. The CDP will contact members regarding payment of the fee, thank you. 
 

All fees run from April 1 through March 31, and fees cannot be prorated.

Once all fees are paid, users will be automatically given access to data through their user IDs on communitydata.ca
