Lessons & Program Descriptions

Our system of lessons allows beginners at any age to start learning from scratch. It also introduces basic hockey or figure skating skills to beginners skaters.

ExpandLearn to Skate

Whatever your age, it's never too late to learn this Canadian past-time! Instructional skating programs are available for everyone - our five-tiered curriculum encourages learning at any level with a comfortable pace. Participants may not be able to be relocated if they select an incorrect level. Please read class description carefully. Parents/guardians are requested to remain at the facility during lessons.

NEW - Starting September 2014, all participants in instructional skate programs must wear CSA Approved Hockey Helmets. Visit Equipment & Safety for further details and what we recommend to wear during our programs.

Learn to Skate Child - Level 1

Develop balance and posture. Introduction to forward skating, gliding, stopping and backward skating. Prerequisite: Level 1 is for participants who are new to skating or are unable to skate the width of the ice surface with a glide. Participants should be able to stand and walk on skates with straight ankles off the ice. Participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Learn to Skate Child - Level 2

Development of forward gliding, stopping, backward skating. Introduction to one foot glides and backward gliding. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 1 or participant can skate (with a glide) the length of the ice without falling. Participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Learn to Skate Child - Level 3

Development of backward stopping, backwards gliding and edges. Introduction to cross-overs, slalom skating, 2 foot turns. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 2 or participant is able to glide on one foot, skate backwards and stop. Participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Learn to Skate Child - Level 4

Development of cross-overs, backward stopping. Introduction to one foot turns, backward circle thrusts. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 3 or participant has strong backwards skating and stopping ability. Participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Learn to Skate Child - Level 5

Development of backward cross-overs, forward edges, skill combinations. Introduction to parallel stopping, backward edges and turns. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 4 or proficient skating ability. Participant is able to perform forward cross-overs, forward inside edges, 3-turns. Participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Learn to Skate Preschool

Children will receive an orientation to the ice surface and learn the basics of skating through games and songs. Participants should be able to stand and walk on skates with straight ankles off the ice. All Preschool participants must wear CSA approved hockey helmet with full face mask.

Children will receive an orientation to the ice surface and will learn the basics of skating through games and songs. Participants should be able to stand and walk on skates with straight ankles off the ice. It is mandatory that all preschool participants wear a CSA approved hockey helmet with a full face mask. For Caregiver and Tot programs, the caregiver accompanying the child on the ice must also wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Learn to Skate Youth

Learn to Skate programs, beginner to advanced, focus on orientation to ice and skating techniques. Course prerequisites are indicated. All youth participants must wear CSA approved hockey helmets.

Learn to Skate Adult

Learn to Skate programs, beginner to advanced, focus on orientation to ice and skating techniques. Course prerequisites are indicated. All adult participants must wear CSA approved hockey helmets.

Caregiver & Tot Skate

Adult must accompany each child enrolled. Adult must have a competent skating ability and be present on the ice to assist their child for the entire class. Learning is focused through the caregiver to ensure comfort, communication and extra safety. All participants (including caregiver) must wear skates while on the ice. Class includes basic skating skills with a warm up, group lesson and games. Preschool participant must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet with a full face mask. The caregivers accompanying the child on the ice must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Equipment Requirements

  • Preschool, Child & Youth Hockey Skills / Hockey Power Skate Programs - CSA approved hockey helmet with full face mask, neck guard, gloves and hockey stick are mandatory.  Full equipment is highly recommended. 
  • Adult hockey Skills / Hockey Power Skate Programs - CSA approved hockey helmet and hockey stick are mandatory. Full equipment is highly recommended.
  • Child Power Skating Program - CSA approved hockey helmet is mandatory.
  • Goalie Skills Program - Full goalie equipment is mandatory.

Hockey Skills - Beginner

The beginner hockey skills programs introduce new hockey players to the basic hockey skills and rules of the game.  If you never played organized hockey, this is the program for you!  Program is designed to prepare participants for entry into house league or recreational / pick up hockey.

  • Introduction to the basic hockey skills including skating, passing, shooting and puck control.
  • Note: This is not a Learn to Skate Program. Participants have passed Learn to Skate – Level 1 or can skate one length of the ice with a glide.

Hockey Skills - Intermediate

The intermediate hockey skills programs will focus on developing skating drills, stick handling and shooting as well as general hockey concepts and game strategies.  Participants must demonstrate a competent level of skating and hockey experience.

Goalie Skills

The goalie skills program introduces goalie players to the basics of goal tending and rules of the game.  Program is designed to prepare participants for entry into house league or recreational / pick up hockey.

  • Prerequisite: Learn to Skate – Level 1 / Preschool or Hockey Skills – Beginner. 
  • Full goalie equipment is required.

Hockey Power Skating

This high energy instructional conditioning program is geared to hockey skaters.  Instructional focus will be on power development, power strides, starting, stopping, lateral mobility and power drills.

  • Prerequisite: Completion of the Learn to Skate - Level 2 or equivalent skating experience.

Power Skating – Beginner

Power Skating is the ability to generate as much strength into each stride in the shortest amount of time possible.  The basic techniques will be introduced in the beginners' Power Skating programs.

  • Prerequisite: Completion of the Learn to Skate – Level 4 or equivalent skating experience.
  • This is not a hockey skills program.
  • Hockey sticks are not required for this program

Power Skating – Advanced

Power Skating is the ability to generate as much strength into each stride in the shortest amount of time possible.  The advanced Power Skating programs will focus on developing the basic power skating skills

  • Prerequisites: Completion of Power Skating Beginner or completion of the Learn to Skate – Level 5.
  • This is not a hockey skills program.
  • Hockey sticks are not required for this program

ExpandFigure Skating

Participants are introduced to the various elements of figure skating including spins, jumps, footwork, dance and music choreography.

  • Prerequisite: Completion of the Learn to Skate - Level 4 or equivalent skating experience. This not a beginner Learn to Skate program.
  • New -  Starting September 2014, all figure skating participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

ExpandSpeed Skating

  • Program designed for youth who have taken Learn to Skate Level 2 or equivalent skating experience.
    Note: this is not a beginner skating program.
  • Participants will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of short track speed skating including skill development and racing techniques.
  • Participants must provide their own skates (hockey skates, speed skates or figure skates will be accepted).
  • Participants must provide their own CSA approved hockey helmet, shinguards, knee pads, gloves and neck guard
