Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre

Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre is one of the largest facilities in Toronto. We offer a variety of programs for everyone from preschoolers to older adults, all of which are located in accessible areas. The pool offers programs including swimming lessons, lane swim, aqua fitness, leisure swim, leadership courses, fitness, sports, female only swims and much more. Our B facility Health Club has all new cardio, muscular strength and free weight equipment and knowledgeable staff to assist and guide you. Fitness classes and swimming are included with all membership options.

Adult Swim 1Basic swimming skills and water safety. This is an introductory or beginner level. Prerequisite: A keen interest in developing skills and knowledge that promotes safe enjoyment of aquatic environments. Adult 1 develops or increases students' comfort in the water through basic floatation, movement and breathing skills and fosters the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to prepare, stay safe and survive in and around water.

AL: Bronze Cross (BC) / SFAThis course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including the introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, teamwork and use of special equipment. Candidates must be able to swim 600 m in 18 minutes. Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR-C are pre-requisites for lifeguard training in the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) program and Lifesaving Society Instructors certifications. Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid (CPR-B). If you withdraw from a program 10 days or less from the course start date, a 50% refund is provided. No refunds are given for classes or programs that you miss. 100% attendance and active participation are mandatory!

Time is devoted in both classroom and water sessions to developing skills in the areas of class management, teaching, evaluation, leadership, communication and administration. This award remains current for two years from the date of certification. Candidates must bring proof of prerequisite awards to the first class. Prerequisites: Minimum age 16 years (by the last day of the course) and Bronze Cross or NLS. Recommended: Standard First Aid with CPR-C and Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Course.
